Understanding BIS Hallmarking and HUID: A Buyer's Guide

Since hallmarking became mandatory in India, every piece of gold jewellery sold must carry standardised purity marks. Reading them takes ten seconds — and protects everything you spend on gold.
The Three Marks
Look inside the bangle, on the clasp of a chain or behind a pendant and you'll find: the BIS logo (a triangle), the purity mark (22K916 for 22 karat, 18K750 for 18 karat, 14K585 for 14 karat), and the HUID — a six-character alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification code laser-etched on the piece.
Verify HUID Yourself
Download the BIS Care app, tap "Verify HUID" and enter the six characters. The app shows the registered jeweller, the article type and the hallmarked purity — matched against the exact piece in your hand. We encourage every Rokde customer to verify their purchase in the store itself; our staff will help you do it.
What Purity Means for Price
22K (91.6% gold) suits traditional ornaments; 18K (75%) is stronger and ideal for diamond settings; 14K (58.5%) powers durable everyday and office wear. The gold rate you pay is proportional to purity — a transparent invoice will always show the rate, purity, net weight and making charges separately, exactly as Rokde invoices do.
Why It Matters at Resale
Hallmarked jewellery with an invoice is liquid anywhere in India. At Rokde Jewellers, our lifetime buyback pays the day's market rate for your hallmarked purity — the marks on the piece are your guarantee, not our word.
Buying gold anywhere? Insist on the triangle, the purity stamp and the HUID. It's your right as a consumer — and your protection as an investor.
